Rabryka → History

2013

Born from the Fokus

The idea of the Jugend.Stadt.Labor RABRYKA has been arisen out of the Creative Camp, which took place in the summer 2013 in the old factory building – on the former wagon building terrain Werk I. With tools, wood and other materials we built a creative place, where we felt good. The place was fulfilled with people, conversation, noises of tools, learning together and effective mood … exactly like this we imagined a centre. For that the term RABRYKA was arisen. The name describes more than a building it describes a vision. We follow this original vision and therefore we name this place and that what we are doing here RABRYKA.

Commitment? Check!

The Creative Camp made us want to create an own place, where we can talk about the city and experiment together. In corporation with the Second Attempt e.V. we decided to file an application to carry out a pilot project for the Jugend.Stadt.Labor. And we did it! In December we got the commitment as one of 8 pilot projects throughout Germany. We were so proud that we were chosen from over 100 applicants. By the financial support we are able to develop our vision further and translate this into action in the next two and a half years. We will explore how we could change Görlitz and our homeland.

After the commitment we started to search for a perfect place. Our basic idea was to build up a container city directly in front of the Werk I. Unfortunately our efforts failed. But then the Energiefabrik Görlitz caught our eyes. The building was revived with art and culture by the student organized art exhibition Zukunftsvisionen. The owner of the Energiefabrik Mr. Incking was enthusiastic.

Building up the base

In February we began to familiarize ourselves with the terrain of the Energiefabrik. With a kick-off week we went public for the first time. By actions like the presentation of the project, a film evening, a public kitchen, lectures, guided tours, an exhibition and a joint picnic with music, interested people took notice of the project and the area. The series of events were also serving as a starting signal for the future work in the new rooms and the outdoor area.

The focus of the year 2014 laid on building up the base and the infrastructure. During weekly assignment we were pulling walls down, laying floors, putting up shelves and building furniture. In this way the creative workshop, office space with a tea kitchen and meeting space came into being. We also removed trash from the outdoor area, to make it useable for the Fokus Camp. Afterwards in the summer we were moving into our new premises.

Practical test during the Fokus Festival

The first practical test was while the fokus camp and the ensuing Fokus Festival. 30 Polish and German young people took part in 3 workshops with topics like car up cycling, urban gardening and cabinetry during the camp.

Afterwards the Fokus Festival lured 2,000 people to the Energiefabrik. Over 50 associations and initiatives with almost 300 actors from all over the region created together a colourful and varied festival program with young art and culture, creative workshops, cinema and theatre, actions to participate in and music.

Start of the impulse projects

After all the hurly-burly was over we were asking ourselves how we want to handle the area and which topics will be important for us in the future. We realized really fast, that just all by ourselves we would not be able to bring the huge factory back to life. In the future RABRYKA should be a common ground on which everybody can bring in ideas and impulse for the Centre for Youth and Socialculture, for the area of the Energiefabrik and the urban space Görlitz/Zgorzelec.

With the help of the impulse projects everybody should be able to use the premises, the tools, the network, the know-how of the team and the financial resources of the project.

One year after our kick-off week, we went public with the event AUF.STADT in the end of February. The focus of this weekend laid on the development of new ideas and the consultation of the existing ideas. A concert and a chill-out evening framed the Creative Workshop.

AUF.WERK.STADT!

On the 18th of April we opened a permanent Creative Workshop. We presented you how you could use it for your small or rather big building and crafts projects in the future. During the wooden building day you were able to get useful tips from the specialist and to build own furniture or to repair the broken ones. On the evening you could show your musical skills while the open jam session.

On Sunday during the 2nd open plenum the JUGEND.KULTUR.BLOG and the URBAN GARDENING project were be approved and will be now able to start with the realization.

"The city of participation" - Work camp Jugend.Stadt.Labor

We, as one of eight Jugend.Stadt.Laboren from all over Germany were host for the Jugend.Stadt.Labor work camp from the 8th to the 9th of May. It was all about to exchange experience, to reflect on the last month and to discus about the topic “The city of participation”. We were pleased to have other pilot projects, representatives of the BMUB, BSSR and Urban Catalyst Studio staying and to exchange ideas about topics like “Jugend.Stadt.Labore as an instrument of participation on urban development”.

The 3rd open plenum and another two impulse projects

30 young people in brilliant sunshine and a lot of news is a short description of the 3rd open plenum in June.

A short look back – a few news about a new concept for the fairly long-term revitalisation of the area, a lot of productive work input in the URBAN GARDENING and BOULDERWAND projects, the extension and renovation of the TON.LABOR and the setting up of the Website for the JUGEND.KULTUR.BLOG KANAPA.

After that a longer look in the future – two new impulse projects, which are now joining RABRYKA. The REPAIR CAFÉ where you can repair broken thing and the project KoLABORacja that is a co-working space or rather a think tank in the premises of the former “Görlitzer Räumen” on the Hospitalstraße 29.

Werk.Stadt.Garten

7 weeks – 7 workshops – 7 events – 2 languages – 50 participants – 660 guests – this describes the Werk.Stadt.Garten 2015 shortly in numbers. From the 19th of July till the 22nd of August we opened our doors to give young people a place to live it up. We hammered, we screwed, we juggled, we painted, we wrote texts and we covered the open area with greenery. Workshop like cabinetry, fire art, Comic.Stencil.Stories, poetry slam, urban gardening, graffiti, building your own longboard and sign language let the participants enough space that they could chill and hang around at one of the creative places in Görlitz. Also they could meet and get to know new people and realize their ideas. In addition to a lot of workshops bands like „Geronimo“ and „Walls & Birds“ enchanted us in cosy summer evenings. Also we were also impressed by the emotionality and expressive power of the texts of the poetry slam. Furthermore the creativity and the explosion of taste at the designer and food market overwhelmed us.

The 4th open plenum and ... one more impulse project

The already approved impulse projects are doing well and it’s still exciting what will be developed in the future. But that’s not all … After the last open plenum we were really surprised when we realized that only financial resources are left over for one last application. Altogether we could give out 13,000€ to six projects. For the last application three projects standing in election. Firstly there could be build up a MakerSpace on the area of the Energiefabrik. Secondly a mobile cinema could enrich the cultural landscape of Görlitz. And the third project idea is the development of an alternative city map of socioculture in Görlitz. After extensive votes the plenum chose the mobile cinema project with 44% and we are happy to have the pleasure of welcoming another great project in the RABRYKA.

Canteen meets burning barrel #1

Although at the beginning of October it already didn’t smell like summer anymore and the temperatures betrayed that the autumn arrived, but we resisted the chilly season with a new room, cosy atmosphere, good conversations, games and a burning barrel. Within the context of this dressing-together-warmly-action we created a large number of ideas how we could revive the Alte Kantine. So for example we could use the Alte Kantine as a table football room, as a concert hall or as a meeting point for associations, lectures and discussions.

Campfire and bread on stick #1

… or another name for it: ”Hello neighbour”. On the 18th of October we invited families and interested young people to a relaxed afternoon campfire, bread on stick with and hot drinks. With this cosy and trustful atmosphere we tried to reduce uncertainty of the neighbours towards the area.

The greatest feedback that we got was that the RABRYKA made a great impression on everybody and that a lot of the visitors like to come back.

The 5th open plenum – that was 2015 and this will be 2016

Christmas and the end of the year were just around the corner and it was time for looking back on the RABRYKA year 2015. We also wanted to speak with impulse projects and to give an outlook or the year 2016. During the plenum also three new impulse projects were presented. Firstly there was the SpaceLab as a space laboratory for performing scientific experiments and observations in weightlessness. Secondly there was the For Free Shop presented. There would be things offered which people don’t need anymore but it would be a pity to throw them away. And the last project would be a room that will be freely available for sportsman and dancer.
